Korean books are having a wider conversation beyond Korea. This September, South Korea and France are holding K-Book Week in Paris to mark 140 years of diplomatic relations, according to KBS World. The event puts Korean literature, readers, and cultural exchange in the same room—an encouraging reminder that Korean is not only something to study in a textbook. It is also a language to meet in stories.

For Korean learners, books can feel intimidating at first. A full novel may be too difficult, but a book cover, a bookstore display, a short poem, or one translated passage can still give you useful language. This Korean On note uses the K-Book Week news as a starting point to learn eight Korean words for talking about books, reading, and the stories you want to share.

You do not need to understand every sentence to begin. Choose a subject you already care about—K-pop, food, travel, history, romance, or a webtoon—and let one familiar interest lead you into Korean reading.

1. 책 (chaek) — book

책 means book. It is one of the most useful Korean nouns, whether you are in a bookstore, library, or talking about something you read.

이 책을 읽고 싶어요.
I chaegeul ilgo sipeoyo.
I want to read this book.

-고 싶어요 means “want to do.” Add it after a verb to talk about what you would like to do.

2. 작가 (jak-ga) — writer, author

작가 means a writer or author. It can describe a novelist, essayist, poet, or creator.

이 작가를 좋아해요.
I jakgareul joahaeyo.
I like this author.

3. 소설 (so-seol) — novel

소설 means novel. When browsing a Korean bookstore, you may also see 에세이 (essay) and 시 (poetry).

한국 소설을 추천해 주세요.
Hanguk soseoreul chucheonhae juseyo.
Please recommend a Korean novel.

추천해 주세요 is a polite and very practical request: “Please recommend [something].”

4. 서점 (seo-jeom) — bookstore

서점 means bookstore. It is useful for travel conversations as well as reading plans.

이 근처에 서점이 있어요?
I geuncheoe seojeomi isseoyo?
Is there a bookstore near here?

이 근처에 means “near here.”

5. 도서관 (do-seo-gwan) — library

도서관 is a library. Notice that it appears often in school, university, and neighborhood vocabulary.

주말에 도서관에 가요.
Jumare doseogwane gayo.
I go to the library on weekends.

6. 번역 (beon-yeok) — translation

번역 means translation. It is a key word when you are choosing between a Korean original and an English edition.

이 책은 영어로 번역됐어요.
I chaegeun yeongeoro beonyeokdwaesseoyo.
This book was translated into English.

The ending -됐어요 often appears when something has been completed or changed.

7. 읽다 (ik-da) — to read

읽다 means to read. In everyday polite Korean, it becomes 읽어요.

저는 매일 조금씩 읽어요.
Jeoneun maeil jogeumssik ilgeoyo.
I read a little every day.

조금씩 means “little by little.” It is a lovely word for a realistic study habit.

8. 추천하다 (chu-cheon-ha-da) — to recommend

추천하다 means to recommend. Use it when you want to share a favorite book, drama, restaurant, or Korean song.

이 책을 친구에게 추천하고 싶어요.
I chaegeul chinguege chucheonhago sipeoyo.
I want to recommend this book to a friend.

A 20-second Korean bookstore conversation

Try this when you want a short, useful reading exchange:

한국 소설을 읽고 싶어요. 초보자에게 추천할 책이 있어요?

Hanguk soseoreul ilgo sipeoyo. Chobojaege chucheonhal chaegi isseoyo?

I want to read a Korean novel. Is there a book you would recommend for a beginner?

초보자 means beginner. Even if you are not in Korea, this is a useful sentence to leave in a bookstore comment, language exchange, or Korean-learning community.

Why Korean books are a useful way to learn Korean

News about K-Book Week is not a reason to rush through a difficult novel. It is an invitation to choose a small piece of Korean that feels alive to you. Read a webtoon episode with a translation nearby, compare a book title in Korean and English, or visit a Korean bookstore while traveling.

The best reading habit is not the most ambitious one. It is the one you can return to. 한 페이지도 좋아요. (Han peijido joayo.) — One page is good, too.
