리치의 영어 공부 Day 20 — HPLC Carryover를 평가한 이유 설명하기

오늘은 HPLC 분석에서 client가 자주 확인하는 carryover 평가를 영어로 설명하는 연습입니다. 고농도 standard나 sample을 주입한 다음 blank를 넣었을 때 작은 signal이 보이면, 그 signal이 실제 sample에서 온 것인지 아니면 이전 주입에서 남은 것인지 확인해야 합니다.

Carryover는 단순히 “blank에 peak가 있었다”로 끝나는 이야기가 아닙니다. 어떤 sequence로 확인했는지, signal이 acceptance criterion 안에 있는지, 결과에 실제 영향을 주는지를 순서대로 설명해야 합니다.

client가 다음과 같이 질문합니다.

“Did you observe any carryover after the high-concentration sample injection?”

이 질문에 답할 때는 아래 다섯 가지를 순서대로 넣으면 좋습니다.

1. high-concentration sample 뒤에 blank injection을 수행했다.
2. blank chromatogram에서 작은 response가 있었는지 또는 없었는지 말한다.
3. 있었다면 어느 수준이었는지 acceptance criterion과 비교한다.
4. sample result나 peak identification에 미친 영향을 평가한다.
5. 필요하면 needle wash 또는 injection sequence를 추가로 최적화할 계획을 말한다.

꼭 써먹고 싶은 표현들

carryover는 이전 injection의 analyte가 autosampler needle, injection path, tubing 등에 남아 다음 blank나 sample에 영향을 주는 현상을 말합니다. client meeting에서는 단순히 There is no carryover.라고 단정하기보다, 어떻게 확인했고 어떤 기준으로 영향이 없다고 판단했는지를 함께 말하는 편이 훨씬 신뢰감 있습니다.

먼저 평가 방법을 설명해요

가장 먼저는 blank를 어떤 순서로 넣었는지 말합니다.

We evaluated carryover by injecting a blank immediately after the high-concentration sample.

We checked carryover.도 틀린 말은 아니지만, by injecting a blank immediately after...를 붙이면 실제 실험 설계를 구체적으로 보여 줄 수 있습니다. immediately after는 high-concentration sample 직후라는 의미라서 carryover discussion에서 특히 자주 쓰입니다.

여러 blank를 넣어 확인했다면 이렇게 말할 수도 있어요.

We included consecutive blank injections after the highest-concentration sample.

이 문장은 한 번의 blank만 본 것이 아니라 residual response가 계속 남는지 확인했다는 점을 전달합니다.

“없었다”보다 안전하게 결과 말하기

blank에서 특별한 signal이 없었다면 다음 표현이 자연스럽습니다.

No significant response was observed in the subsequent blank injection.

There was nothing in the blank.보다 No significant response was observed가 analytical report와 client discussion에 더 적합합니다. 완전히 0인지 단정하기보다, method interpretation에 영향을 줄 정도의 response는 없었다는 뜻을 정확하게 전달합니다.

아주 작은 response가 있었다면 숨기지 말고 기준과 함께 설명합니다.

A small response was observed in the blank, but it remained below the predefined acceptance criterion.

이때 small peak라고만 말하면 상대가 얼마나 작은지 판단하기 어렵습니다. below the predefined acceptance criterion 또는 below the reporting threshold를 붙여 data-based assessment로 바꿔 주세요.

Acceptance criterion과 impact를 연결하기

carryover 평가에서는 response가 보였는지보다 그 response가 reportable result에 영향을 줄 수 있는지가 핵심입니다.

We compared the blank response with the response at the reporting level.

reporting level은 impurity method에서 보고가 필요한 수준을 뜻할 때 유용합니다. 그 비교 결과를 이어서 이렇게 설명할 수 있습니다.

The carryover level was negligible relative to the reporting threshold, with no impact on the quantitative results.

여기서 negligible은 무시해도 될 만큼 매우 작다는 의미입니다. 다만 이 표현은 비교 data가 있을 때 쓰는 것이 안전해요. 아직 data를 검토 중이라면 아래처럼 더 조심스럽게 말합니다.

Based on the current evaluation, we do not see a meaningful impact on the reportable results.

이 문장은 “영향이 전혀 없다”고 과장하지 않으면서 현재 data가 보여 주는 결론을 분명하게 전달합니다.

필요할 때는 다음 조치까지 말해요

현재 result가 acceptable하더라도 method robustness를 높이기 위해 추가 확인을 할 수 있습니다.

As an additional precaution, we are reviewing the needle wash conditions.

needle wash solvent나 wash duration을 비교 중이라면 다음처럼 말해 보세요.

We are evaluating whether an extended needle wash can further reduce the blank response.

solve the problem이라고 말하기보다 further reduce를 쓰면 아직 problem이라고 단정하지 않으면서도 proactive하게 개선을 검토하고 있다는 인상을 줍니다.

먼저 아래 질문에 답해본 뒤 sample answer를 소리 내어 따라 해보세요.

  strong sample보다 high-concentration sample이 analytical context에서 더 정확합니다.

• ❌ “There was no peak, so no carryover.”

  ✅ “No significant response was observed in the subsequent blank injection.”

  carryover는 visible peak만이 아니라 response level과 criterion을 함께 평가해야 합니다.

• ❌ “The peak is very small, so it is okay.”

  ✅ “The response remained below the predefined acceptance criterion.”

  okay 대신 acceptance criterion을 말하면 훨씬 과학적인 설명이 됩니다.

• ❌ “We will wash the needle more.”

  ✅ “We are reviewing the needle wash conditions as an additional precaution.”

  이미 method failure가 난 것처럼 들리지 않으면서, follow-up 계획을 자연스럽게 말할 수 있습니다.

어디서나 쓸 수 있는 문장

“Based on the blank evaluation and comparison with the predefined acceptance criterion, we do not see a meaningful impact on the reportable results.”

이 문장은 carryover뿐 아니라 blank interference, low-level background response, sample diluent interference를 설명할 때도 활용할 수 있습니다. 핵심은 observation 하나만 말하지 않고, evaluation과 criterion comparison을 근거로 impact를 판단한다는 구조입니다.
